DIY vs. Professional Lawn Care Services

Do it yourself (DYI) lawn maintenance can be a daunting task.  It’s just one of those things people don’t like to do. Weekends are made for fun, not for mowing the lawn. Not to mention the cost, maintenance and storage of the necessary equipment.  For those are who are die-had do it yourself-ers here in South Florida here are some tips.

  • In South Florida the high majority of the residential lawns are St Augustine grass, the recommended height to mow to is of 3.5 to 4 inches.
  • Do not remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade. This is called “Scalping”. It can badly stress your lawn and leave it susceptible to diseases, insect and the invasion of weeds.
  • It is best to actually leave the grass clippings on the ground. The clippings quickly compost and return nutrients back into the soil.
  • Sharpen the mower blades. The idea is to cut the grass not tear it. Tearing stresses the lawn and makes it susceptible to diseases, insects and the invasion of weeds.
  • Do not mow when your lawn after it rains. Wet grass clippings keep your lawn mower blades from making the clean cuts.

Lawn Watering Tips

One of the most important parts of maintaining a healthy South Florida yard is proper watering.
  1. Have your rain sensors tested or have one installed.  This will shut down your system when it rains to help with over watering and wasting water.  Plus if you are watering with city water this will save you money!
  2. Check your irrigation system regularly.  Set a reminder on your phone or do it each time you fire up the BBQ or after you cut the grass or swim in the pool.  The more the better, why? sprinkler heads easily get clogged and may be broken which result in an area getting no water or a gusher flooding an area.
  3. The goal is to water as little as possible while still keeping the grass green.  If you are home often you can set your system for 1-2 days a week, if you notice things are dry turn it on for 20 minutes.  Over-watering can lead to fungus in the winter and weeds in the summer – actually weeds all year round.  Then you have to resort to spraying the weeds and treating the fungus.  All those chemicals throw off the natural organisms in your soil making it more difficult to keep a healthy yard.  It’s like taking antibiotics, we only want to do that when we have to and we try to avoid it by drinking water and eating healthy.
